What are your thoughts on...

What are your thoughts on drawing your own references?

I know that personally, I prefer to have them drawn by myself. I used to just use templates and such for all my references. I think I did that because their lines were better than mine ever could have been. But I made a ton of characters that way and, as you can see now, I don't have any of them left. They all fizzled out into character heaven.

I also had a friend back in the day, !tori-xx who encouraged be heavily to draw my own references. I remember it was like yesterday when she said that she wished I had drawn my own references for my characters. And then she dared me to stop using templates. And it stuck!

But I'm currently commissioning two references on FA right now and it's...a weird feeling. I can easily draw their references, but I want them to have some by *Chib-bee because she's freaking fantastic! It's a mixed feeling because while I do want them to have a fancy reference by her, I do kind of regret not being happy with the ones I drew for them myself.

I'm not looking down on people who use templates for references or people who haven't drawn their characters from scratch. I'm just interested in what people's thoughts are on this situation. =3

I feel the same way most of the time... I've found that I prefer to draw my own because of the fact that it's hard for others to get the correct build and/or markings of my characters. This mainly happens with my fursona's front leg markings. Her markings look like "gloves" but is just a different shade of her fur. I like using templates or requesting a reference sheet from someone else when I'm pressed for time though, or have a hard time drawing the animal/creature/human/etc. I hope that this proved at least somewhat helpful. I used to use templates for refs, but then realized that I'd developed a habit of drawing my characters all with the same body type that way. Drawing my own refs has helped me develop, but nobody's artistic experience is quite the same so who's to say one way is better? Plus I LOVE seeing the ways people re-interpret my characters, in fact, sometimes I make refs intentionally bland (anatomy & style wise) to see what people do with it.

I love drawing my own refs XD its like my favorite part! but im also cool with having refs other people make, especially if they're better than mine. Although theres nothing better than looking through a character album when all my characters (that i bought/didnt design) were redrawn in my own style. Woo.

Im also an art snob like that, so meh.

I always draw my own references. A lot of markings can vary between styles, so it's nice to know what the actual artist's interpenetration of it is on their own drawing. You can also give your character may more personality by drawing your own instead of just using a generic lineart.

I think it's easier to portay your own character yourself (unless you send a tl;dr textwall to the commissioned), but otherwise I don't care. Templates can't portray different personalities, but if someone else draws it, whatevs. Sometimes a static reference is ok if it's for design purposes only, but if someone is to draw a picture that involves personality (vs. a fursuit or something) it would be better to draw it -whether it's you or someone else.
IDK if that makes sense lol. I use templates if I just want to get a design down so I can get the colors and all that easily. Usually when I draw it myself I get frustrated long before I get to coloring because I just want to get the design down.

I strongley think you should draw your own references, but I kinda go againist myself for making refs for others. Its not bad not to, but I always thought I was just acting weird when I thought that not drawing your own refs is not you.

PERSONALLY, i think drawing you're own refs is great, but i also don't think having other people draw you're refs is bad either. really the reference just needs to project the personality, and design of the character. So whether you do that, or someone else does doesn't matter that much. SO if you feel like someone else can really capture the essence of you're character for you, then go for it! =)

If it really bothers you that you don't draw you're own ref, then maybe you can /combine/ the 2, like take some of you're drawings, or words, and put them together with the commissioned one... maybe XD
